The secret of good and successful wind ensemble music?
It's a question of ability – not taste.

Seminars for members of church brass ensembles (Posaunenchor)

Blasinstrumente vor HimmelIn order to do justice to everyone, let me emphasize one thing:

Let us discuss together how such a seminar should be designed, implemented and funded.

There are two possible alternatives to organise the seminars:

● For individual musicians or groups of musicians at a fixed place and at fixed dates
● For brass bands and church brass ensembles (Posaunenchor) by appointment at their own location

Seminar P1:
Practice makes perfect – easier said than done?
Important steps for beginners

Suitable for children, adolescents and adults (who have had up to two years of teaching)

The situation:
„I ought to practice, my band director told me. Now I'm sitting at home and I do not remember exactly what the piece sounded like. I try to practice as best as possible. But I guess, at our next practice session, part of what I'm doing won’t be right again. How do the others manage it?”

The seminar contents:
The right way to practice makes you perfect. The necessary hints and tricks are the subject of this seminar. From warming up and the right technique of embouchure, for example, to the optimal breathing technique, tone shaping and quality. In other words, practicing the right way from A to Z. Everything will be explained in detail and immediately put into practice. And all this is complemented by an introduction to the best care of the instrument and the proper handling of our “tools.”

The seminar modules:
warming up – instrument care – finishing sessions – techniques of embouchure – breathing technique – articulation – dynamics – rhythm– tone shaping and quality – analysing sheet

Seminar dates/Seminar place:
on demand

Seminar costs:
€ 50 p.p. (for young people up to 21 years)
€ 75 p.p. (for adults) including soft drinks and biscuits

Seminar P2:
Modern pieces, modern rhythms – how can one learn them? Important steps for advanced band members

Suitable for teenagers and adults with at least two years of playing experience

The situation:
„Traditional church music is not a problem for me. However, the more recent adaptations and pieces do have their pitfalls. The rhythms especially vary a great deal which can confuse me."

The seminar contents:
The focal point of this seminar is on how to cope elegantly with the challenge of new pieces and how to expand one’s existing capabilities. A detailed “decryption” of the rhythms is followed up by intensive teaching of how and why proper articulation makes it easier to play. And from then on, any modern piece can be played with a smile.

The seminar modules:
warming up – finishing sessions – techniques of embouchure – breathing technique – articulation – dynamics – rhythm– tone shaping and quality – analysing sheet music – interplay and aural training / tuning

Seminar dates/Seminar place:
on demand

Seminar costs:
€ 50 p.p. (for young people up to 21 years)
€ 75 p.p. (for adults) including soft drinks and biscuits

Seminar P3:
Customized seminars for individual church brass ensembles (Posaunenchor)

These seminars can also be organized for complete church brass ensembles (Posaunenchor).

Seminar contents and modules:
will be chosen according to your individual needs and problem areas

Seminar place:
at the “home ground” of each trombone band, in familiar surroundings

Dates and duration of the seminar:
can be arranged according to individual requirements

Seminar costs:
€ 50 euro per hour, plus a flat sum for meals and travel expenses by arrangement

Hugo Loosveld Portrait 1

Before I start:
I am well aware that brass bands, marching bands and church brass ensembles (Posaunenchor) are not rich. They seldom ask members for contributions. Paying for seminars is new to them since their sponsors, for example the fire departments or the church, often provide all the material they need.

Therefore, the first item on my agenda is always to provide advice on how such a seminar should be designed, implemented and funded so that all parties involved will be satisfied.
